Lose fat, preserve muscle
See whether your nutrition, training, or GLP-1 plan is reducing fat without sacrificing hard-earned lean tissue.
Measure fat, muscle, visceral fat, bone density, and body shape in one visit—then get expert guidance to turn the data into better health and performance decisions.
See what the scale misses
A DEXA scan shows whether your plan is reducing fat, preserving muscle, lowering visceral fat, and supporting bone health—so you know what to keep doing and what to change.
See whether your nutrition, training, or GLP-1 plan is reducing fat without sacrificing hard-earned lean tissue.
Measure visceral fat around your organs—a risk marker that weight and appearance alone cannot show.
Detect fat loss and muscle gain even when your total body weight barely changes.
Establish a bone-density baseline and track meaningful changes over time.
| What you get | NYCPL DEXA | Other DEXA scans | InBody / smart scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3D body scan | Included with your assessment for shape, measurements, and posture | Not included with standard DEXA scans | Not part of the measurement |
| Detailed consultation | A detailed expert consultation is included after your scan | Many providers deliver the report without a detailed consultation | No DEXA results consultation |
| Equipment and calibration | Brand-new Hologic equipment that is routinely calibrated and kept current | Equipment age and calibration standards vary by provider | Uses bioelectrical impedance, not DEXA imaging |
| Medical oversight | Program overseen by a medical doctor; scans performed by licensed radiology technicians | Staffing, licensure, and clinical oversight vary by provider | Not administered as a radiology procedure |

Common questions
There is no comparison. InBody estimates; DEXA measures. In validation studies, DEXA error rates for estimating body fat were typically in the 1–2% range, while InBody was as high as 8% and performed particularly poorly for some populations. DEXA uses low-dose X-ray technology to map fat mass, lean tissue, and bone mineral content directly. InBody and similar BIA devices estimate composition from an electrical current, so hydration, meals, sweat, inflammation, and time of day can distort the result.
Yes. GLP-1 medications can be highly effective for weight loss, but a scale cannot show how much of that change is fat versus lean muscle. Regular body composition testing helps track fat loss, muscle preservation, visceral fat, and bone health during rapid weight loss. Pairing the data with adequate protein and resistance training can help bias results toward fat loss rather than muscle loss.
The amount of radiation from a DEXA scan is extremely low — less than a round-trip cross-country flight. Pregnancy is the most common contraindication.
DEXA is contraindicated during pregnancy. The Styku 3D body scanner uses non-invasive infrared technology with no radiation and can be used to track body shape and measurements during pregnancy.
No referral is needed. Appointments are open to anyone who wants accurate body composition and bone-health data.
Absolutely not. NYC Performance Lab works with high-level athletes, but most clients are everyday New Yorkers looking to better understand and improve their health. The experience is private, welcoming, and tailored to your goals and fitness level.
